At least 13 people lose their lives and 98 wounded in train crash in Mexico.

A deadly train crash in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive censure from critics regarding the pace and handling of the country's key infrastructure initiatives.

The crash took place on the trans-isthmus railway, a rail link constructed to join the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was intended to provide an competing rail corridor to the Panama Canal, intended to promote commercial progress in the area.

“We will meticulously determine the cause of this incident,” stated the national leader.

The leader reported that, of the around 250 passengers on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in serious condition. The president noted plans to travel to Oaxaca to confer with those affected.

Flagship Project of Previous Administration

The Interoceanic Train was a central development scheme of the immediate past president, whose term ended the year before. This rail line was closely associated with his government's economic vision for the southern region.

Another massive railway undertaking from that time, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the comprehensive effort to kickstart the economic fortunes of a historically poorer part of the country.

Construction Oversight and Risks Apprehensions

The construction of both rail lines was overseen by the nation's military, marking a dramatic increase of its responsibilities in civilian works. They were executed at an fast-tracked pace, beating expectations to be at least partly launched before the end of that administration.

However, this rushed timetable had concurrently sparked significant questions over operational security.

  • Sunday's crash was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train within the past twelve months.
  • This includes an prior crash this month when a train struck a truck at a railroad crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also experienced a couple of non-fatal derailments.

Calls for Investigation and Halt

In the aftermath of the catastrophe, the chief of a major opposition party called for an prompt halt in the construction and operation of all similar projects.

This halt was proposed pending a full independent investigation. The party declared that the loss of life "calls for immediate answers."

In response, the national leader maintained that the train had been operating in total adherence to all safety requirements. Promises were given that the government would remain "accountable" in both the development and management of these strategic undertakings.
