Conservative responses to the limited disclosure of files related to the Jeffrey Epstein case have been mixed, with some backers of the former Trump administration pointing out the noticeable presence of former President Clinton and other Democrats in photographs, while others lamented how heavy censorship cast Donald Trump and GOP members in a negative manner.
Administration Justifies Redactions with Strong Hyperbole
Justice Department representatives defended the heavily censored sections with intense hyperbole. “At no point in American the nation's history has a President or the Department of Justice been so open with the American people about such a delicate legal matter,” declared a senior Justice official Todd Blanche, who issued a detailed letter describing the redaction procedure.
Concerns Prompted by Blacked-Out Sections
While Trump's identity and image are visible in portions of the documents, the extensive redactions raise serious questions about the information may be hidden behind them. A number of Republicans swiftly called for greater openness.
“People are furious and walking away,” wrote Georgia Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene.
In a social media post, GOP Kentucky Thomas Massie said the redactions break the statute, and implied that a subsequent Congress may move to remove the Attorney General, Pam Bondi, for that offense. “Regrettably, today’s file dump grossly does not adhere to both the intent and the letter of the act,” he added.
A Faction of Conservative Figures Swing In Support of the Disclosure
But, some rightwing pundits and Trump loyalists swung firmly behind the administration.
The release—from a DOJ led by close Trump ally Pam Bondi—contains scores of documents that are completely censored, and many of the individuals depicted in pictures have their identities blacked out.
But a few do not, including high-profile individuals like Clinton, entertainer Michael Jackson, and academic Noam Chomsky. The presence of Clinton, in particular, enabled certain rightwing voices to launch the attack.
“It’s quite rich how the Democrats falsely accused President Trump of associating with a sex offender, only for the Trump DOJ to release Epstein files that show Bill Clinton swimming nude with a convicted sex offender,” wrote right-wing activist Laura Loomer.
“New documents show Bill Clinton without a shirt in a hot tub with a woman that is other than his spouse Hillary Clinton,” wrote lawyer Rogan O’Handley. “There’s only one reason Epstein would take pictures of a Commander-in-Chief with a young woman in a jacuzzi: Leverage.”
Former President Spokesperson Releases Response
Bill Clinton has repeatedly stated he was aware of no illegal actions by Epstein and has not been alleged to have participated in any misconduct. “The White House hasn’t been concealing those documents for an extended period only to dump them at the last minute on a Friday to shield Bill Clinton,” his spokesperson Angel Ureña stated in a statement.
“The release is about shielding themselves from what comes next, or from information they will try and hide forever. Therefore they can publicize as many low-quality decades-old photos as they want, but this is not about Bill Clinton. Never has, not ever be,” the statement added.
Overall Rightwing Commentary Seems Muted
However, overall discourse on the political right was relatively subdued after the disclosure, especially when juxtaposed against the vociferous demands for transparency that preceded the congressional approval to pass a law requiring the files' publication.
The commentator, who recently accepted media access at the Defense Department, had been one of the loudest advocates for a full disclosure. In February, she chastised the Justice Department generally and Bondi specifically after a set of rightwing influencers were given physical binders of materials that contained no new information.
