Lackluster Oracle Results Erase Over $70bn From Market Value, Stoking AI Bubble Concerns.

The tech firm's lackluster latest earnings have slashed over $70bn from the market capitalization of the software and data company co-founded by billionaire Larry Ellison, heightening mounting apprehensions of a speculative bubble in AI-related stocks.

Sharp Share Price Fall Follows Revenue Miss

Stock in the firm tumbled by over 11 percent overnight after it posted a disappointing 14% rise in revenues to $sixteen billion dollars in the latest quarter, as it simultaneously announced plans to increase its AI spending by about $15 billion.

The enterprise recorded softer-than-forecast three-month sales for the quarter ending in November, with revenue growth at its key cloud services division growing at a more modest rate than projected, at thirty-four percent.

Market Concerns Over Investment and Leverage

Investors were also disappointed by a more moderate 68% increase in revenues from its infrastructure business.

At the same time, the market were spooked by the firm's elevated projections for AI investment. It now expects capital expenditure to jump by 40 percent to $50bn, with the lion's share of the increase allocated for building data centres.

This heavy spending plan comes amid a increasing leverage, with Oracle's long-term debt having increased by 25 percent over the past year to reach $nearly one hundred billion dollars.

"Frankly, the earnings release was not catastrophic, but it served to validate worries around substantial AI spending, financed by debt, with an unknown timeline for returns," commented a senior analyst.

Wider Market Implications and Ecosystem Concerns

Sustained exuberance about the promise of AI technology has fueled a leap in stock prices in the past year, but there has been a increasing chorus of warnings from regulators and business leaders who warn stock market valuations could tumble if investors become disappointed by the development or adoption of AI solutions.

While Oracle has established itself as a key tech player developing enterprise solutions for major corporations worldwide and has more recently grown rapidly in the cloud sector, analysts point to increasing questions about how reliant companies are becoming on mutual investment within the artificial intelligence industry.

Oracle disclosed that its metric of remaining performance obligations soared by 440% over the past year. However, market watchers were skeptical when it was revealed that these commitments were propelled by new commitments from other tech giants like Meta and Amazon.

"While these are two solid customers, it will not allay concerns that big tech's AI investments are interdependent, which leaves it vulnerable to a erosion of market faith," stated a research director.

"In summary, strong contract growth was not enough to calm fears about AI and the enormous amount of investment spending needed by firms to build AI capacity."

Ripple Effect in AI-Related Stocks

Other AI and tech-related stocks subsequently declined in extended trading following the Oracle report. Key movers included:

  • Nvidia: Stock dropped by 1.3%.
  • Alphabet (Google): Stock dropped by 0.3%.
  • SoftBank: In Japan, the AI investor shares tumbled by 7.7 percent on Thursday.
