Larian Studios Announce a Latest Divinity, Declaring it Their Largest RPG Ever

The speculation around the recent awards show was significant, notably after host Geoff Keighley posted a mysterious image of a strange statue. The mystery has been revealed. Larian Studios is developing a fresh Divinity game.

Announced as Divinity, the game was showcased with a audacious trailer packed with intense imagery, from a burning man to an orgy and the literal unleashing of hell.

Moving Beyond Original Sin

Anyone anticipating Divinity Original Sin 3, this is not that. Larian warned that a follow-up to its critically acclaimed RPGs is not on the cards right now.

However, the developer described this new Divinity as a next chapter of the core franchise. This phrasing hints that the team could be designing a real-time experience rather than another tactical title. For now, it remains theory, as only a cinematic trailer is available.

What Makes Divinity Special

The Divinity series is highly rated and it's fair to claim it sparked the recent resurgence of complex computer role-playing games. These games are known for detailed worlds, player agency, and complex character building—traits that later found massive success in games like Baldur's Gate 3.

While its world is traditional swords and sorcery, what truly sets Divinity apart is the remarkable agency given to the player.

Where many modern RPGs have streamlined options, Divinity is packed with niche playthroughs only possible if you're playing as a distinct build with a specific history of choices.

The series is also famously open-ended, enabling players to improvise throughout the entire experience. Virtually all objectives can be completed in diverse methods, sometimes in unexpected fashion.

  • You might find an answer because you heeded something a dog told you.
  • Or, you could bypass a challenge by moving environmental hazards in a unorthodox way.

More to Come

It is this design philosophy that have cemented the series to declare games like Divinity Original Sin 2 as among the greatest role-playing games in history. Now, fans can look forward to another adventure in this groundbreaking franchise.
