Weather balloons transporting a large quantity of cigarettes have interfered with air travel in Lithuania, as Vilnius Airport was required to halt operations for several hours when multiple of them floated into the airspace of Lithuania.
Aviation Problems
The temporary shutdown led to 30 flight cancellations impacting six thousand travelers, with officials warning that additional delays could occur throughout Monday.
Law Enforcement Actions
Officials confirmed that multiple atmospheric balloons were observed crossing into Lithuania from the adjacent country of Belarus, with two of which ending up right above the main terminal.
As many as 14 of the weather balloons deployed throughout the weekend drifted across the metropolitan zone, which is the location of Lithuania's primary metropolis and close to the Belarusian boundary.
Smuggled Items Retrieved
No fewer than 11 balloons containing numerous containers of black-market cigarettes have now been retrieved, though this number could rise, according to border security officials.
Regional Smuggling Pattern
Despite the disruption, officials emphasized that "Meteorological equipment transporting smuggled items - cigarettes from Belarus - are common occurrences in the Baltic region and Poland."
Since January, over five hundred weather devices have been recorded entering Lithuania from Belarus, while 966 were noted during the prior year.
Neighboring Country Impact
At the same time, the north-eastern Polish territory, which similarly neighbors Belarus, has documented over numerous instances in which contraband was flown from its adjacent country employing the meteorological equipment.
Criminal Methodology
In response to questions about why criminal organizations employ a method that is particularly vulnerable to weather conditions rather than more controllable drones, representatives elaborated that "Atmospheric equipment are basic instruments used by illegal traders - they are more economical than drones for carrying smoking materials from Belarus."
Security Service Goals
Authorities continued that "The objective of our agencies is to seize the largest possible volumes of smuggled items and to detain organisers and participants so that this activity become not financially viable and create minimal risk to civil aviation."
International Concerns
These airspace violations occur during a period of heightened tension in Europe following multiple unmanned aircraft violations that have created aviation problems across European nations.
Recent incidents in adjacent nations have caused EU officials to speed up talks about enhancing aerial security throughout European airspace.
