Users Stopping Slimming Injections Regain Pounds at a Quadrupled Rate Than Those on Conventional Diets

Obesity treatment often requires long-term strategies.

Fresh analysis reveals that people who stop using blockbuster GLP-1 drugs like semaglutide or tirzepatide may regain reduced body mass at a significantly accelerated pace than those who stop conventional diet and exercise regimens.

Findings released in a leading medical journal demonstrates that while obese individuals frequently drop about a fifth of their body weight while undergoing treatment, the weight returns at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month upon discontinuation.

"People using such medications should be aware of the potential of fast weight regain when the therapy is stopped," warns lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.

Such speed of regain means a reversion to pre-treatment weight in about a year and a half.

Weighing Treatments

The research, which reviewed dozens of studies involving thousands of participants, compared the outcomes of the injectable medications with older methods.

Scientists point out that individuals who shed pounds through lifestyle changes alone generally experience a more gradual weight regain—approximately 100 grams monthly—after stopping.

The Reason for the Quick Regain

Nutrition scientists propose the mode of action of the drugs is key to understanding the amplified weight return.

These medications copy a natural hormone called GLP-1, which controls appetite.

"Artificially providing GLP-1 concentrations several times higher than the body's typical production could lead to the body to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous hormone, and could reduce responsiveness to its actions," said Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition specialist.

"Discontinuation of this hormone supplement leads to hunger is unsuppressed, making excessive eating much more probable."

An Ongoing Disease?

The NHS advise the jabs for people with obesity-related medical conditions, accompanied by recommended diet and exercise modifications.

A number of clinicians say that, considering the high risk of relapse, the therapy should be considered long-term.

This opinion is echoed by drug manufacturers, who say that the findings "underscore the chronic character of obesity," comparing it to managing conditions like high blood pressure.

Patient Testimonies

Users who have stopped the medication describe a sudden resurgence of appetite.

"It was like something activating and you're instantly extremely hungry," recalled an individual.

This challenge is exacerbated if users have not established lasting lifestyle or habit changes during treatment.

Growing Use

Survey data suggest that a significant number of adults in the UK have tried these injections in the last 12 months, with interest being substantial.

  • Adoption is more common among females compared to males.
  • The middle-aged age group shows the greatest usage rates.
  • A large proportion obtain the medications through private healthcare rather than public health services.

In conclusion, researchers stress that while the jabs are potent tools for weight loss, they are not a permanent solution and maintained weight loss hinges on ongoing behavioural support.
